Tactile
Tactile feedback in a membrane switch is actually an enhancement, which provides the user feedback when they press the key location. Typically, the switch consists of a top and bottom layer of polyester with a tactile actuator that when pressed, momentarily completes the circuit while providing the user a degree of response based on the switches construction.

Posi-Tac II Construction

Download Data Sheet
Memtron’s Posi-Tac II Construction is a widely established, flexible and reliable tactile technology. This cost-effective production is utilized in the majority of our tactile switch applications due to its appeal across many environments and operation conditions. The construction performs well in situations where abuse, harsh environmental conditions and errant electrical charges are inherent. The switching elements are encapsulated within layers of polyester and acrylic-based adhesives to optimize necessary performance requirements.
Posi-Tac II is conducive to several different stainless steel dome configurations, shielding options and value-added capabilities, such as backlighting. This functionality makes it ideally suited for most Memtron customers implementing polyester membrane switches.
Attributes
- Actuation forces from 8 to 30 ounces depending on dome size and spacer configuration
- Typical actuation forces are 15 +/- 3 ounces
- 2,000,000 actuation life expectancy
- Highly effective in applications with dense key populations, or with tactile and non-tactile key in combination
- Eliminates possibility of false entry since all domes are placed in direct contact with circuitry
- Can incorporate interchangeable legends over keys as a well as non-key areas
- Operating temperature range of –20 to +70 C and storage temperature range of –40 to +85 C
- Conducive to adding embedded LEDs
- Easily incorporates ESD, RFI, EMI shielding without additional material layers
- Can be environmentally sealed, performs well in harsh environments
- Conducive to ring or perimeter embossing
- Suitable for Polyester, Polycarbonate, and Elastomeric overlay

Poly-Tac II Construction

Download Data Sheet
As a hybrid switch construction providing tactile response through a custom embossed overlay, Poly-Tac II is cost-effective in applications with highly populated key arrays or in smaller keypads with significant volume requirements. The overlay design permits key centers and key spacing to be closer together, which eliminates the need for dome spacers and dome landing pads in the switch layout.
Poly-Tac II is ideally suited for Memtron customers implementing either polyester membrane or printed circuit board backed switches.
Attributes
- Cost effective alternative to traditional stainless steel dome technology
- Typical actuation forces are 15 +/- 3 ounces
- 1,000,000 actuation life expectancy
- Highly effective in applications with dense key populations
- Can incorporate non-tactile hidden keys
- Operating temperature range of –20 to +50 C and storage temperature range of –40 to +75 C
- Conducive to adding embedded LEDs
- Easily incorporates ESD, RFI, EMI shielding without additional material layers
- Integration into both flex circuit and PCB constructions
- Suitable for polyester overlays
- Optional single layer tail accommodates ZIF or friction-fit connectors in addition to conventional connectors

Uni-Tac Construction

Download Data Sheet
Memtron’s Uni-Tac Construction is a proven construction that meets cost considerations in low-key population polyester membrane switches and printed circuit board (PCB) backed switches.
Uni-Tac is the construction of choice for low-key density or generous key spacing switches because it consolidates all of the membrane trace routing onto one layer of material. This reduces the material content of a membrane switch, thereby reducing the cost.
For PCB backed switches, Uni-Tac represents the market choice because its efficient design can incorporate passive and active components, while keeping material usage and interconnects to a minimum.
Attributes - Polyester Membrane
- Suitable for switch applications with low key density and/or generous spacing
- Actuation forces from 10 to 30 ounces depending on dome size and spacer configuration
- Typical actuation forces are 15 +/- 3 ounces
- 2,000,000 actuation life expectancy
- Conducive to ring or full key embossing
- Single tail layer is ideal for ZIF or friction-fit connectors
- Suitable for Polyester, Polycarbonate, and Elastomeric overlays
- Operating temperature range of –40 to +85 C and storage temperature range of –40 to +85 C
- Integration into both flex circuit and PCB constructions
Attributes - Printed Circuit Board
- Suitable for switch applications with low key density and/or generous spacing
- Actuation forces from 10 to 30 ounces depending on dome size and spacer configuration
- Typical actuation forces are 15 +/- 3 ounces
- 2,000,000 actuation life expectancy
- Conducive to ring or full key embossing
- Single tail layer is ideal for ZIF or friction-fit connectors
- Suitable for Polyester, Polycarbonate, and Elastomeric overlays

Poly-Tac I Construction

Download Data Sheet
Memtron’s Poly-Tac I Construction is a popular implementation and sometimes cost-effective alternative to traditional stainless steel dome constructions.
By embossing the top layer of the membrane switch, we are able to change a traditional non-tactile switch construction to create tactile feedback. The Poly-Tac I construction fits well in conditions where the user is looking for a lower cost alternative to stainless steel domes, but has a ring or full key embossing requirement for the overlay.
Attributes - Polyester Membrane
- Suitable for switch applications with low key density and/or generous spacing
- Typical actuation forces are 15 +/- 3 ounces
- 1,000,000 actuation life expectancy
- Conducive to ring or full key embossing
- Suitable for Polyester, Polycarbonate, and Elastomeric overlays
- Single tail layer is ideal for ZIF or friction-fit connectors
- Operating temperature range of –20 to +50 C and storage temperature range of –40 to +75 C
- Integration into both flex circuit and PCB constructions
Attributes - Printed Circuit Board
- An efficient design for most keypad programs regardless of key density
- Offers significant cost savings by combining a membrane switch keypad and a printed circuit board into one common assembly
- Typical actuation forces are 15 +/- 3 ounces
- Suitable for Polyester, Polycarbonate, and Elastomeric overlays
- 1,000,000 actuation life expectancy
