"I just like to smile. Smiling's my favorite." Buddy the Elf

Pleasant people are more enjoyable than those who aren't.
- Working with them is better.
- Buying from them is better.
- Sellling to them is better.
- Playing with them is better.
- And pleasantness begins with a smile.
With all of its benefits, it should be easier to make smiling the rule rather than the exception.

Follow That Moose!
"Mudgy & Millie" is a children's book written by local Coeur d'Alene author Susan Nipp. Mudgy Moose searches high and low for his friend Millie Mouse along the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. Families can join in the fun as Mudgy wanders into town in his quest to find Millie.
The Mudgy Moose Trail, created in conjunction with the City of Coeur d'Alene Parks Department, begins at the base of Tubbs Hill and ends at Independence Point, where Mudgy discovers that Millie was hiding close by all along.

Did you know?
Easter is the #2 top-selling candy holiday, behind Halloween. Valentine's Day is #3.

The reason the date of the celebration changes each year dates back to 325 A.D. (you believe that?!). It was set under the Roman emperor Constantine as the first Sunday after a full moon following the Spring equinox.

Reason #7 your presentation stinks
|
|
Your fonts are unreadable!

Diagnosis: You used fonts that were too fancy, too small or both.
Why you did it: The fonts looked great on your computer; the projector... not to much.
What resulted: The audience squinted and peered, then gave up. Blackberry time!
How to fix it: Use large fonts in simple faces (like Ariel); avoid boldface, italics and UPPERCASE.

Company Corner: Environment

Jacqueline Ram PhD. - Vice President New Business and Strategy
"To err is human: to forgive divine" is a phrase coined by Alexander Pope however in designing and developing control technologies, the "error" could be catastrophic.
At Esterline Interface Technologies, we are responsible to design and develop custom user interfaces that incorporate touch, sensing, and control technologies for applications brought to us by our customers. When asked what is the most important aspect to know about our product development process, we reply "clearly understanding our customer's needs and the environment in which our user interfaces will be used, is vital to the health and well-being of everyone".
Understanding the environment in which the device will be used, who will be using it, how it will be used, whether it has all of the features required for the application, and anticipating what could go wrong, are all part of our product development and standards adherence process. Material selection, how parts are tooled and sourced, how the devices are tested, packaged, and set-up for installation, are all part of our capabilities here at Esterline Interface Technologies.

Our wealth of knowledge and experience in control technologies having designed and manufactured over 2,000 unique control devices, we provide a clear path to an engineered solution for your unique requirements. From IEC to ISO standards for product safety to RoHs and WEEE for environmental impact and disposal concerns, we incorporate the necessary design standards to assure product compliance and safety. Clearly understanding the environment in which the device will be used is the beginning of a methodical path to a safe, usable product!

Capability Focus: Reliability Testing

Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT)and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS)
It is amazing how some products hold up in the real world. Used over and over again they validate their purchase price by providing reliable service over the test of time. It is very likely the quality and ruggedness that you see in certain products is a result of some manufacturers performing HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) and HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening).
These processes differ in focus from each other but both are used to uncover problems through the means of time compression. In other words, HALT and HASS use much higher stimuli than would exist in the field with the result of forcing failures or revealing design flaws in the device in significantly less time. This allows a company to see how their design would hold up "over the years" without having to wait.
Defects are uncovered in the space of hours and are observed with the purpose of making ongoing corrections. These defects are then monitored, classified according to their nature and corrected. Sample corrections include improvements to the assembly process, making mechanical revisions to the design to remove stress or inherent design flaws or revising components that are not performing according to their advertised potential.

Technology Focus: Pacinian adds usability to touchscreens
|
|
|
Brian Snow - Vice President Engineering
Pacinian HapticTouch™ technology is used to apply motion to a touch surface. This motion is tailored to simulate more traditional buttons from a user 'feel' (or Haptics) sensation.
Esterline Interface Technologies designs and integrates the Pacinian HapticTouch technology into touchscreen applications for customers looking for a competitive edge.
Haptic feedback is intended to make up for the absence of tactile feedback from an entirely smooth touch surface. With haptic feedback, you can see, hear, and feel what you are touching.

Innovative Solutions: Co-Molding
|
|
|
Carol Ruyf - Program Manager
Co-molding is a relatively new process which is gaining popularity and has become one of the industry's fastest growing molding technologies. It is being driven by marketing teams, end users and customers who are all looking for new ideas and leading edge ideas for consumer goods. This technology produces products which have a "soft touch" and "tactile feel".
The process to manufacture a silicone co-molded bezel utilizes two types of molds and a complex manufacturing procedure. The end result is a rigid part, covered with a soft feeling, tactile layer of silicone material. Typically, after the part is molded, it is decorated by painting the surface and adding silk-screened and/or laser etched graphics. A protective top coat is often applied to the cosmetic surface.
Co-molded technology has been incorporated in a wide range of products varying from medical and military equipment to cell phones and baby toys.
