Esterline Korry Facility Awarded LEED Green Building Certification
Feb 8

EVERETT, Wash., February 7, 2011 — Esterline Control Systems announced today that its new manufacturing plant for Korry control products has been awarded LEED® base certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ) is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.

Esterline's Korry facility, located near Paine Field in Everett, Washington is the largest LEED Certified manufacturing facility in Washington State. Its LEED certification was based on a number of green design and construction features that were positive for the project itself and the broader community.

“Esterline is pleased to be contributing to the quality of life in Snohomish County,” says Dan McFeeley, Esterline Korry president. “By using less energy and water, our facility supports a healthier environment for our employees and local residents, as well as creating a long-term foundation for a sustainable, profitable business that creates local jobs.”

“Esterline’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Esterline's new Korry facility serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

Specific green strategies applied during the development of the Korry facility include:

  • Redevelopment of an under-utilized site.
  • Diversion of 90 percent of the demolition construction debris to re-use. Concrete and asphalt were crushed on-site and used for temporary roads during construction.
  • Efficient mechanical systems using 26 percent less energy than a typical industrial building.
  • Reduction of building water use by 40 percent.
  • Drought-tolerant landscaping using native and low-water-usage plants.
  • Low-emitting building materials.
  • Extensive use of van pools and the construction of a bus stop for transit.

U.S. Green Building Council®

The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council is committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings. With a community comprising 80 local affiliates, more than 18,000 member companies and organizations, and more than 155,000 LEED Professional Credential holders, USGBC is the driving force of an industry that is
projected to contribute $554 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product from 2009-2013.

LEED

The U.S. Green Building Council's LEED green building certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. Over 32,000 projects are currently participating in the commercial and institutional LEED rating systems, comprising over 9.6 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 114 countries.

By using less energy, LEED-certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
