Lighting Solutions

Our lighting R&D department is widely recognized as the most advanced in the industry. For more than 60 years, KORRY products have consistently featured new lighting and filtering technologies, setting the standard for display illumination. Our optical engineers and chemists have developed proprietary technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes that allow KORRY products to deliver unsurpassed lighting uniformity, color accuracy, sunlight readability, and night-vision compliance.

Life-of-the-aircraft LED illumination

The long life, low power consumption, and low heat output of LEDs have long made them ideal candidates for illuminating aircraft switches and indicators. Now KORRY LED products deliver these advantages plus exceptional contrast, sunlight readability, and color control. Our life-of-the-aircraft LED switches and indicators meet or exceed the lighting performance of conventional incandescent products but never need lamp replacement. This yields significant savings in inventory, labor, and AOG costs.

An example of our capabilities is our patented customization of LED dimming curves. We offer LED displays that emulate the dimming curve of an incandescent source (first graph, below) or we can produce any number of possibilities, such as a stepped dimming curve (second graph, below).

Sunlight Readability

KORRY Chromalux switches and indicators have long been standards in military and commercial aerospace whenever sunlight readability was an absolute requirement. Our products deliver bright, uniform legends, readable in direct sunlight – while maintaining low surface temperatures. Conversely, when legends are not energized, our proprietary optics and non-reflective coatings prevent illusory “ghosting” in sunlight.

Our understanding and control of all the optical elements – light sources, reflectors, diffusers, and filters – allow us to offer sunlight-readable displays using technologies not traditionally noted for image contrast, such as AMLCDs and LEDs.

Night-Vision Lighting

One of Esterline’s leading-edge specialties is in the design and manufacturing of lighted indicators, switches, integrated panels, and display systems compatible with night vision imaging systems (NVIS). Through interdisciplinary research in optics and chemistry, we have developed proprietary materials and processes that allow us to precisely control the color, brightness, and night vision radiance of incandescent, LED, fluorescent, and other light sources. For aviation, we offer NVIS red, yellow, green A and B, blue, and white lighted displays, as well as full-color AMLCD displays, that meet or exceed the requirements of MIL-STD-3009 (MIL-L-85762). For ground applications, we meet US Army guidelines for secure lighting. In addition, we meet the night vision specifications of overseas governments and manufacturers.
