(National Business Aviation Association Convention & Exhibition – October 10, 2017) Esterline Avionics Systems is pleased to announce that the newest capabilities of its CMA-5024 Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) GPS Landing System Sensor Unit (GLSSU) have been certified by EASA on the ATR 42 fleet of a regional European airline.
Aeroconseil, an AKKA Technologies group company, has developed the EASA STC allowing installation of the CMA-5024 GLSSU to provide ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft with Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance System (LPV) approach capability. A total of thirteen ATR 42 aircraft are planned to be retrofitted with the CMA-5024 for LPV. As of this date, seven aircraft have been provisioned.
A second ATR 42 customer, Air Saint-Pierre, has selected the Aeroconseil STC with this CMC Electronics equipment and is already flying with Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance System (LPV) approach capability.
According to Aeroconseil: “The Esterline CMC Electronics LPV solution resolves an important issue for the airline as some of their flight destinations are in the process of losing the ILS radio landing aid.”
Esterline is supplying its CMC Electronics avionics equipment, including the CMA-5024 GPS Precision Approach Receiver and CMA-5025 Control Panel. The solution is stand-alone and LPV operations will have no impact on the existing navigation system. This satellite landing system function is enabled by the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) that is managed by the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) and the European Satellite Services Provider (ESSP).
Don Paolucci, Vice President, Navigation & Integrated Systems, Esterline CMC Electronics, said: “This STC confirms the flexibility of our LPV solution and leverages the latest capabilities of the CMA-5024 as a unique and innovative solution for ATR operators.”
The CMC Electronics high-performance CMA-5024 GPS Landing System Sensor provides RNP-RNAV and LPV GPS Approach capability, and meets the requirements for an Instrument Flight Rules, civil certified Global Navigation Satellite System. The CMA-5024 is a DO-260B compliant position source and, when coupled with a compliant transponder, it satisfies all DO-260B ADS-B Out mandates worldwide, without waiver or exception. The sensor provides Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) SBAS GPS capability from departure to approach and complies with published CNS/ATM navigational mandates. WAAS/SBAS augments GPS to provide an extremely accurate navigation solution that will support all flight operations from en route to GNSS and WAAS/SBAS Localizer Performance with a Vertical Guidance (LPV) CAT-1 equivalent approach. The CMA-5024 is provisioned for growth to GBAS with a built-in VHF Data Broadcast receiver.
