(National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) – October 9, 2011) Esterline CMC Electronics (CMC) will be showcasing its SmartDeck® integrated avionics suite at this year’s NBAA. Show attendees are invited to visit booth # N5507 and view new SmartDeck functionalities such as its second-generation Highway-in-the-Sky (HITS) symbology and a three-display, dual-pilot configuration.

“Our engineering and human factors teams have evaluated the ways pilots interact with advanced avionics systems and this updated version of the SmartDeck represents much of what we have learned,” said Greg Plantz, Director of Marketing and Sales for SmartDeck. “For example, our unique Highway-In-The-Sky symbology is being reconfigured to give pilots the information they need using the attitude and directional cues with which they are more familiar. This greatly improves situational awareness while reducing pilot workload and stress.”

Another key differentiator of the SmartDeck’s new-generation symbology is that it is tailored to the needs of pilots flying Class II and III aircraft. “To meet the scheduling demands of revenue flights, professional pilots are faced with operations in higher traffic, lower visibility situations,” said Plantz. “Our primary goal will be to provide clear, understandable information that pilots can use, while eliminating much of the clutter that adds no measurable benefits. For example, during a recent meeting of CMC’s Pilot Advisory Board, it was determined that pilots want to be able to selectively ‘declutter’ their integrated displays and see only the information that they need for a particular phase of a flight.”

“Pilots have told us that they want a way to get the precise flight information they need when they need it,” Plantz said. “That capability has moved to the top of our list. Listening to pilots and bringing a new set of valuable, safety-enhancing tools to the cockpit is our primary goal for the new-generation SmartDeck.”
