Thought for the day:
Every single person in every single company is either in sales or affects sales.
Every single person in every single company is either in service or affects service.

The Chief Executive Officer is also the Chief Sales Officer.  He or she is responsible for the success of the company, and the success of the company is based on selling quality goods and making a profit.

Did You Know?

Eagle

One of the many advantages to living in and visiting Coeur d'Alene is the Bald Eagles. Every year, scores of these magnificent birds, often with their young, travel south to Coeur d'Alene Lake. In the winter (December) the eagles come to feast on the Kokanee Salmon runs; in the spring (April-August) they mate and nest. Bald Eagles have wing spans from 5.5 feet to 8 feet in length and are between 30-36 inches in height.

On December 31, 2009, 135 eagles were counted.

Most presentations stink. Big time. Over the next 10 issues we will post the 10 most common reasons they stink, along with tips to improve your presentations.

REASON #10:

It is all data, no story!

 Number 10

Diagnosis:
You presented scads of information without any context or meaning.

Why you did it: You wrongly assumed a presentation was the same thing as a lecture.

What resulted: The audience pulled out their Blackberries when you clicked your fifth slide.

How to fix it: Make your presentation tell a story, ideally with the audience as the heroes.

 Company Values
"Integrity is at the core of all that we do"

Esterline Advanced Input Systems adopted a core set of values two years ago which put front and center, our desire to have a strong set of beliefs by which we operate on a daily basis, known as the 5 R's: Respect, Responsive, Relationship, Retention, and Relentless. We adopted these R's as our value system for each and every action we take to serve our internal as well as our external customers.

In 2009, led by John Clutter, VP OEM Business, a team of individuals from many functional areas within Esterline Advanced Input Systems gathered to renew our Mission Statement and create a Vision Statement so we could define what we did explicitly and what we desired for our future. Knowing our value system would serve as the foundation for our future at Esterline Advanced Input Systems we adopted the following tagline, "Integrity is at the core of all that we do".

Vision Mission Values

The resulting Mission and Vision statements build upon our already-established value system and cohesive philosophy that our customers, colleagues, and peers need consistent performance to achieve our individual and collective goals. So we share with you, our valued customers, our Mission and Vision Statements:

Vision Statement

Reliability Test and Compliance Certification at Advanced Input Systems: Paul Paroff, Reliability Test Engineer

Control panels lead a hard life. They are the part of any system that "meets the public" and they need to be out in front of any system they control. So they are often the one part of a system that gets the most use and abuse.

Take for example the keyboard and mouse on your desktop PC. When your cup of coffee accidentally gets knocked over is it the CPU that is likely to catch the spill? When you find yourself banging out an angry response to a frustrating email is it the monitor that feels the brunt of your frustrations? When you feel the cord of your mouse get caught on something restricting its movement is it the network cable under your desk that feels the strain from your attempts to free it?

The Reliability and Compliance Engineers at Advanced Input Systems are always thinking about how your control panel might fail from a daily routine that it may encounter in the performance of its duties. For us, field failure is not an option. That's why we take into consideration the environment, usage models, and unintended abuse that your product will be exposed to in all of our designs.

Our engineers work with you to ensure that the control panel that we design and build for you will operate reliably for the life of your system. To accomplish this we perform an array of wear-out testing on every type of switch we make, we also consider and test for durability in environmental conditions such as operating and storage temperature and humidity extremes, vibration, shock, and impact, exposure to weather, spills, immersion, chemical exposure, dust and dirt, abrasion, altitude, electrostatic discharge, electromagnetic emissions and susceptibility, and of course safety. Advanced input uses Design-For-Manufacturability and Assembly (DMFA) principles in all of our products.  Then we go beyond that to make sure that our part of your system connects and mounts securely to the whole product.

This work does not start when the product is built. The Reliability and Compliance Engineers at Advanced Input Systems are a part of each design team so that these requirements are considered at the very beginning of the design phase and carried through to production of the final product. More Info

Glass PanelProjected Capacitive Glass Panel

Projected capacitive technology is one of many available methods used to provide human interfaces to machine controls. The electrical current that passes from the finger to the machine activates capacitive coupling between the finger and the switch on the plane below. Capacitive sensors are non-contact devices capable of high-resolution measurement of the position and/or change of position of any conductive target.

Advanced Input Systems can provide a complete control panel solution using many front surface materials. One common example is the use of tempered glass. Glass has a number of benefits and can also be printed on the rear surface to produce a nearly indestructible graphic. When combined with capacitive sensors, a glass panel produces an extremely attractive and functional human interface device.

So what's so great about capacitive glass panels?
Glass fronted control panels that incorporate projected capacitive sensors have no moving parts, are easy to clean, are resistant to most chemicals, can be tempered to improve strength, can be used outdoors, can be used with bare hands or gloves, can be decorated and illuminated and will work even if the glass is scratched or cracked.

Advanced Input Systems is an integrator of a wide range of control technologies including customized capacitive control solutions. Contact us and take advantage of our thirty years of user interface design and manufacturing expertise!

Building Expansion Update
The project is going well! The roof is on, the concrete flooring is complete except for finishing, the interior walls are up, and all the interior mechanical, electrical, and finish work is proceeding rapidly and on schedule. The most recent big event was a plant shutdown on February 5th and 6th to allow main electrical service to be extended to the new area. It won't be long before we have a little more breathing room! Our internal layout and move plans are progressing and we should be able to start utilizing the new space as early as the first week in April.  Video Link
